What Size Bernedoodle is Right For You? Mini vs. Medium vs. Standard

Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes to suit all kinds of families, homes, and lifestyles. Whether you're dreaming of a compact companion or a big teddy bear of a dog, there’s a Bernedoodle for you.

At Bernedoodle Boutique, we specialize in raising human-focused, family-ready Bernedoodles in mini, medium, and standard sizes. Each size brings its own charm and unique considerations when it comes to energy level, space, and care needs.

Here’s how to decide which Bernedoodle size is right for you.

Mini Bernedoodle

Typical Weight: 15–30 lbs Height: 13–17 inches at the shoulder

Why choose a Mini? Minis are perfect for smaller homes, apartments, and families wanting a more portable pup. Their compact size doesn’t mean compact love: They’re still incredibly affectionate, eager to please, and energetic enough to enjoy a good walk or play session.

Best For:

  • Urban or apartment living

  • Families with young children

  • Frequent travelers or retirees

Keep in Mind: While smaller, they can have big personalities. Early training and socialization help focus their energy and develop calm confidence; something we build into our program with ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) and structured routines.

Medium Bernedoodle

Typical Weight: 30–50 lbs Height: 18–22 inches at the shoulder

Why choose a Medium? Medium Bernedoodles are a sweet spot: Big enough for adventure, but still manageable in the home. They’re excellent for active families who want a dog sturdy enough to romp with kids but not so large that they overwhelm the household.

Best For:

  • Suburban families with yards

  • Active homes

  • Those wanting the balanced temperament of a bigger dog in a slightly smaller package

Keep in Mind: Mediums often have a steady temperament and enjoy being in the heart of the action. Our puppies benefit from early exposure to children, grooming tools, and noise desensitization to help them settle easily into family life.

Standard Bernedoodle

Typical Weight: 55–90 lbs Height: 23–29 inches at the shoulder

Why choose a Standard? Looking for a large, loyal companion? Standard Bernedoodles are gentle giants with a calm, loving demeanor. They’re especially well-suited for families with space to roam or who love outdoor adventures.

Best For:

  • Families with large yards

  • Homes with older kids or teens

  • Owners with experience handling larger breeds

Keep in Mind: Due to their size, they need room and time to exercise. They also take up more space; physically and financially (think food and grooming costs). But their loyalty and gentleness are unmatched.

Are There Other Sizes?

Yes, some breeders refer to sizes like “Tiny” Bernedoodles (under 15 lbs) or “Micro Minis.” This size Bernedoodle isn't typically part of our breeding program. It's difficult for us to ensure a Bernedoodle will stay under 20 lbs knowing they have the genetics of a big breed in them. We don't want to set people up for disappointment if the dog they expected to stay 15 lbs ended up being 40 lbs... We've seen it happen.

If you are looking for < 20 lbs, we offer Cavapoos. We are confident our Cavapoo puppies will stay under 20 lbs full-grown and have a very similar temperament to Bernedoodles.

We focus on health, temperament, and confident family companionship over novelty sizing.

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Size Bernedoodle

Choosing the right Bernedoodle size is about more than square footage. It’s about your lifestyle, activity level, experience, and what you picture in a canine companion.

At Bernedoodle Boutique, we support you every step of the way—helping match you with the size and temperament that fits your home, heart, and family. Our structured development program ensures all our pups, regardless of size, are exposed to daily human handling, socialization, and the world around them.

Still not sure? Reach out and we’ll help guide you through the decision. After all, it’s about more than size, it’s about the perfect fit.
